Selene – Among the Frozen

a1372235329_2‘Peace of Mind’ has a beginning alike to an orchestral version of Trivium’s “A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation” and sets the theme for Selene’s release – a strong mix of strings and heavy classical influences. ‘Til The Shadows’ sparks strong similiarities to Finnish-rockers Nightwish, powered by piano and passionate operatic female vocals. With many hooks and guitar solos, no-one can doubt Selene’s ability to piece a song together or join forces to overcome objectives that stand in their way. “End of It All” provides a solid filler to the tracklist with it’s catchy chorus and delightful piano pieces while “Ghost” resonates and falls like snow falling – simply peaceful. The Londonderry metallers trace back to their roots with instrumental “The Codex” before “Rain” yet again demonstrates the range of vocal and instrumental abilities. It will be interesting to see where Selene end up in 2014 and whether this gothic metal can survive on this indie-soaked island – I hope so. Mark Dunn, GiggingNI.com
