Houston is a well-rounded track with a poignant chorus declaring: “The fighting’s only worth it, if we win the war”. It’s evident from the band’s previous tracks – Different Life/Escape Plan – that they’ve worked hard to develop a more polished sound, tidying up slightly messy riffs and out of tune vocals. It’s hard to believe that they’re the same band even though the recordings are only months apart.
This is a heartfelt track with a great melody and harmonies. Particularly, near the end of the track, the chorus becomes more and more powerful with unexpected but successfully gruff vocals. Foreign Affairs aren’t quite out of the woods yet, there’s still a lot of work to be done in defining their sound and working that bit harder toward perfection when recording their debut album. This is a band worth keeping an eye on. Finola Doran, GiggingNI.com
