Songwriters can be a dime a dozen and tend to get themselves overcrowded with similiar, and sometimes familiar, acts seeking their own break. His New Atlas, an 18 year old by the name of Eoghan O’Hagan, is keen for such success and falls under that generic category. ‘Blood’ is an attempt at that radio-friendly single but fails to reach it’s peak, ticking all the necessary songwriter boxes except memorable. There’s no catchy lyric or melody itching to get stuck in the listener’s head, despite the song being musically sound and a story throughout.
B-side ‘Like a Balloon’ stands out of the generic category. A testing foot on the side of a mountain. It’s worth the risk as O’Hagan’s vocal ability is tested but elegantly thrives alongside delicate guitar strokes, reaching the high point and demonstrating the true potential lurking below.
