The streets of Banbridge were buzzing on Saturday 21 June when the town celebrated its 11th annual busking festival, with over 80 buskers taking part in this year’s competition.
The gorgeous weather undoubtedly helped bring the vast crowds into the town to enjoy the colourful array of busker performers with traditional bands, singer songwriters, acoustic and electric guitarists, flautists, tubas and trombone players all featuring in a superb afternoon of family entertainment.
The onlookers were soaking up the atmosphere of the day and were entertained by acts from all over Ireland, North & South, and were not disappointed with the range of talent on show.
Following the busking competition the awaiting crowd were treated to an excellent spectacle of music by Allison McGrath and Soulantics in Solitude Park before the all-important winners were announced. BBC Radio Ulster’s Ralph McLean and the judging panel had some difficult decisions to make when deciding on the final winners.
The prize for this year’s Overall Winner is a spot on-stage at the 5th annual Sunflowerfest in August on Tubby’s Farm, Hillsborough, which went to Holywood busker Matthew Malcolm. Speaking on behalf of Sunflowerfest organiser Vanessa Magowan said, “We are delighted to welcome Matthew Malcolm to our growing list of performers for this year’s festival. We believe Matthew’s musical talent and style both make him an excellent fit in this year’s line-up. Our whole team and our guests are anxiously awaiting Matthew’s performance.”
