The question of where to place this on a playlist was admittedly a challenging one. I had to dig a little deep, but think I’ve a geek-worthy suggestion.
I’ll get to that in a minute…
Hail to the Geeks by Marc Leach is instrumental illustrations of your favorite comic book, graphic novel, sci-fi show, and heavy metal solos all wrapped into one.
Hail to the Geeks reads like the cool soundtrack to a glossy cult classic film. Featured thus are title track that bursts into action like a science fiction space chase.
Followed by Free as One with its thunderbolts and lightning in the lab of the mad scientist/guitarist. Amid these electric shocks of sound can be felt the influence of such artists as Steve Vai. Voices serves as an almost anxious and anticipatory interlude. The most robust track is Fly Falkor Fly; a buoyant heroic anthem.
So, if I were integrating this album into my collection, I think it’d fit rather nicely somewhere between the soundtrack of Flash Gordon by Queen, and the soundtrack of the 80’s cult classic animated film, Heavy Metal. Told you I had to dig deep. Perhaps that’s a good thing this return to handcrafted artistry. It’s a fun ride and a great listen, and the guitar work is out of this world.
