Review: Patriot Ghosts – Give It Away
Give It Away, the debut single from the Northern Irish three-piece alternative rock group Patriot Ghosts offers a glimpse of what’s to come from them in the future, with a debut album on the horizon.
The group describe themselves as “often anthemic” and “hugely melodic” contrasted with “lingering melancholia”. These claims are validated all within the opening moments of the single. The opening lyrics and vocals from vocalist Martin Cannon are filled with a similar sense of melancholy and pessimism that can be found on the likes of In Utero.
The pounding instrumentals, however, allow for a seamless transition into the chorus, which is lyrically far more optimistic and sounds almost designed to be belted out in an arena. The band clearly draw inspiration from some of the greats of alternative rock and grunge, with clear traces of the likes of Foo Fighters and Nirvana being found throughout the single.
With Give It Away, the band have firmly established themselves as ones to watch within the local music scene, promising new music in the near future.
