Get to Know: Jealous of the Birds
“Behold, a hummingbird” Stuart Bailie. A concise summation of Naomi Hamilton aka Jealous of the Birds; aptly suggestive of an artist whose work demonstrates at once strength and fragility, beauty and quirk.
Variously described as, “introspective indie folk with fierce fiery post punk” and with music that is, “poignant and vulnerable, bursting with honesty and raw passion”, this young artist is widely regarded as a force to be reckoned with.
Her debut album Parma Violets was released in 2016 to critical acclaim and in 2017 she was selected to support Divine Comedy on tour. Living up to those highest of expectations, in February of this year Naomi announced the news that she had been signed to Atlantic Records. The future looks bright. Get to Know Jealous of the Birds.
Name: Naomi Hamilton AKA Jealous of the Birds
Where you’re from: Portadown
Describe your style in 5 words or fewer: Melodic songs about being human
Best thing about Northern Ireland: It may be rough round the edges, but there’s something endearing and self-effacing about the people and the places here that’s grounding. It will always feel like home
Digital music, CDs or vinyl: All three – it just depends on my mood and where I happen to be. Spotify is a constant when I’m travelling or chilling out. When I was at uni I went through a phase of listening to some of my favourite records on a Discman, and in the last few years I’ve gotten into collecting vinyl. I feel like any format is viable so long as you’re getting the music fix you need
Biggest musical influence: My musical influences are scattered all over, but when I think more holistically of artistic influences, people like David Bowie, Bjork, Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell and Kurt Cobain come to mind
What you’re listening to right now: “I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar“, by Fleet Foxes
Favourite venue: Not sure that I have one just yet. Recently got to play the Usher Hall in Edinburgh on tour with The Divine Comedy and it’s an especially gorgeous space
Favourite local band/artist of the moment: Joshua Burnside
Last gig you attended: A local gig at Voodoo that Listener played with support from WASPS
Best gig you ever attended: It’s a toss up between Death Grips at The Limelight, Belfast and Fleet Foxes at Iveagh Gardens, Dublin
Favourite album of all time: Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”. One of the most bittersweet timeless records ever made
Musician you’d love to collaborate with: Robin Pecknold
Dream festival line-up: Some alternate universe where Curtis Mayfield, Queens of the Stoneage, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Cocteau Twins and Tame Impala could be reconciled into a festival soup of sonic goodness
You have only £10 left in the world, what do you buy?: Two Boojum burritos
Jealous of the Birds will headline at Belfast’s Empire Hall on 23rd May 2018. You can check out details of recordings and upcoming live dates here.
