Multi-instrumentalist Sharon Shannon has been confirmed as the headline act to close this year’s SOMA festival in County Down later this month.

The Irish star who is famed for her musical ability on instruments such as the melodeon, fiddle, tin whistle and the accordion has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music over the years including Dónal Lunny, Sinéad O’Connor, Christy Moore, Moya Brennan, and the late Kirsty MacColl.  There was even a time when Sharon was a member of The Waterboys.

Considered as one of the world’s most highly acclaimed traditional musicians, songwriter Shannon has become on of Ireland’s most famous exports in the world of music.

In 1991 Shannon bagged herself the best-selling traditional Irish music album of all time with her self-titled debut record.  Although her roots are firmly in the Irish traditional world she’s well known for having a wide and diverse mix of musical influences.

Shannon is also famed for her appearance on the recording of Steve Earle’s global hit Galway Girl in 2000.  Since 1991 she has released 16 albums.

Running from July 18-22 across Castlewellan in Co Down The SOMA Festival is an annual festival full of concerts, workshops, art exhibitions, storytelling, poetry, health & wellbeing fair and various family events across the week.

SOMA Festival Director Tiona McSherry said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming Sharon Shannon onto the 2018 lineup alongside Paul Brady and whole host of other fantastic local and national acts.

“Sharon’s fantastic stage presence and amazing back catalogue will make this a 2018 show not to be missed.”
