The Unsung Poet of Margate: Pete Doherty’s Greatest Lyrics

Pete Doherty is a libertine in the truest sense of the word. A somewhat misunderstood troubadour who lives life in the fast lane and shows no signs of slowing down. Perhaps more famous for his antics behind the scenes, a well-documented drug addiction, a public falling out with bandmate Carl Barat, an (albeit short) spell in Wormwood Scrubs, that video with Amy Winehouse and the mice; Pete has always been a controversial figure but a talented one at that. Wild antics aside, the man can write a tune! Whether it’s as frontman for The Libertines, Babyshambles or his solo efforts, his heart-on-sleeve lyrics have kept his loyal fan-base entertained and singing-along for the past 27 years.

Having recently turned 40 and swapped the streets of Camden for a life by the sea, Peter as he’s now known is about to hit the road with his new band The Puta Madres. They’ve just released an album and are kicking the tour off here in Belfast on Friday 3rd of May. Before they get here, let’s celebrate this indie icon and take a look at some of his best lyrics.

The Libertines – The Good Old Days

“If you’ve lost your faith in love and music then the end won’t be long. But if it’s gone for you I too may lose it and that would be wrong..”

The Libertines – Music When the Lights Go Out

“”Is it cruel or kind not to speak my mind and to lie to you, rather than hurt you?”

Babyshambles – F*ck Forever

“What’s the use between death and glory, I can’t tell between death and glory, happy endings no they never bored, me, happy endings they still don’t bore me, they have a way to make you pay and to make you toe the line”

Peter Doherty – Broken Love Songs

“Every morning I’ll be singing, like a caged bird who might say John, Paul, George and Ringo, help me pass the hours away”

Peter Doherty – Flags of The Old Regime

“The fame they stoned you with, you soldiered it and made your fortune but you broke inside”

The Libertines – Don’t Look Back into The Sun

“Cornered the boy kicked out at the world, the world kicked back a lot fuckin’ harder now”

Babyshambles – A’rebours

But if I should fall, would you vow today to pay tomorrow, the fucked off big debt, I owe to sorrow”

The Libertines – Can’t Stand Me Now

“Don’t look back into the sun, you’ve cast your plans but you’re on the run and all the lies you said, who did you save?”B

Peter Doherty & The Puta Madres – Narcissistic Teen Makes First X1

“With everything I stole since we met, I stole no kisses, just some books and the odd cigarette”

..and finally, not forgetting this classic:-

Babyshambles – Albion

“Talk over Gin in teacups and leaves on the lawn, violence in bus stops and the pale thin girl with eyes forlorn”
